Nerve Balm has proven effective for nerve pain as well as joint and soft tissue
pain. The nerve pain may be from diabetes, excessive alcohol use, chemotherapy or of
unknown origin. This pain may be in the feet or hands or in other parts of the body. In addition,
it is effective for nerve pain from nerve entrapment, such as at the elbow or wrist, “sciatica”
with nerve root impingement in the back and down the leg and during and after shingles.
Nerve Balm also treats nighttime muscle spasms in the feet and legs. It has also been used
successfully for Raynaud’s phenomenon with intense pain in cold weather in the fingers, toes or
hands. It also relieves chronic itching of unknown origin in the absence of any skin lesions. It has
also proven effective for pain from accessible joints including the fingers, hands, elbows,
shoulders, knees and feet. The joint pain may be acute, from injury, or chronic from different
forms of arthritis. Nerve Balm has been used successfully to relieve soft tissue pain from
conditions including tendonitis, plantar fasciitis as well as soft tissue injuries from trauma, or
overuse from work or exercise. It can be applied either prior or after exercise. It prevents
muscle cramps, particularly in the feet or lower extremities at night.
Nerve Balm salve contains magnesium taurate which block glutamate transmission in the body,
the main neurotransmitter of pain. It also contains GABA, the primary inhibitory
neurotransmitter for pain inhibition. It includes vinpocetine, a known blocker of pain
transmission along peripheral nerve pain fibers. In addition to pain relief, Nerve Balm contains
aloe vera, the three essential oils of peppermint, rosemary and lavender and alpha lipoic acid.
These ingredients provide strong anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects. Inflammation is
present in most of the conditions mentioned above, and Nerve Balm provides healing of the
lesions presenting with pain. Finally, Nerve Balm contain St John’s wort, an herb used for
millennia, for the healing and restoration of nerve function. In addition, it contains two ayur
vedic compounds, Brahmi oil consisting of Bacopa in sesame seed oil, and Shankpushpi
(convolvulus pluricaulis). Ayur vedic medicine is the ancient, and primary medicine of India and
Bacopa, sesame seed oil and Shankpushpi have been an important part of its formulary for
healing disorders of the nerves along with their use for other medical conditions including
arthritis.
Apply topically up to three times/day. Rub gently into the painful areas. For
sciatica, may need to apply to the side of the lumbar spine where there may be a nerve root
entrapment causing the sciatica as well as along the pathway of pain into the leg. Depending on
the pattern of pain, it may be best to apply first thing in the AM prior to the onset of pain.
Initially can apply a thin layer of the salve and increase the amount as needed. Generally, pain
relief occurs quickly over several minutes. Can reapply in 10 to 20 minutes for greater efficacy.
For overuse soft tissue pain, may apply both prior and after the activity that provokes the pain.
For nighttime pain, apply at bedtime. May need to reapply in the night if the pain awakens you
from sleep. For nerve pain in the feet, may put on your socks after some drying of the salve. In
order to experience the restorative effect of the salve, may need to use for weeks up to several
months to reduce the inflammation and allow the injured area to heal.
